Walk the secluded trails of Emerald Isle Woods in search of migrating warblers and colorful waterfowl. The preserve, owned by the town of Emerald Isle, showcases rare maritime forest habitat and more than 100 species of birds have been recorded there.

Hike the ramparts at Fort Macon State Park to observe migrating shorebirds in spring, and hawks and falcons during the fall.

The Rachel Carson Preserve is a great place to get off the beaten path and observe marsh birds like herons, egrets and shorebirds.

Patsy Pond is a great North Carolina birding trail to see the rare and endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, along with other elusive species like Bachman’s sparrow and brown-headed nuthatch.

The vast Croatan National Forest is home to a number of nesting species, including Eastern bluebird, pine warbler, Carolina chickadee and Eastern towhee.
