Hammocks Beach State Park

Reward yourself with a day on Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park, one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast!  Located on Bear Island are miles of unspoiled barrier island beaches and maritime forests that compose Hammocks Beach State Park in NC. Daily passenger ferries are available in the summer season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), with vessels running every 30 minutes. Private boats are also permitted access to this secluded and tranquil island.  
Located just south of Swansboro, you'll find wild dunes, sand ridges, maritime forests, marshes and wetlands full of wildlife. Spend the day swimming, sunning, picnicking, fishing, camping, shelling and boating. 

The only thing crowded about Bear Island is the list of things to do! Bath house and picnic facilities are available in the center of the island. Camping and campfires are permitted in designated areas. Educational and interpretive programs are offered. Just check with the Visitor's Center for a schedule. Escape from commercialism and retreat to Bear Island where you can welcome the challenges of relentless sun, sand, sea and sky.
