Baxter Emerald Isle Vacation

We knew we were near our destination when we got to Swansboro. We stopped at the fruit stand near Cedar Point and loaded up on Carolina peaches, fresh corn and boiled peanuts.  As we go over the bridge, the green patches appear and the chanting from the back seat begins:”Emerald, emerald.  Look at the birds”.

Our cottage is ready, and the grandkids are in swimsuits before we can unpack.  They have flown in from Utah and become Tar Heels for a week.  My son caught a fish for dinner and added fresh shrimp from the the nearby seafood market.

Our plans included our annual visit to the aquarium.  This year the grandkids took the marsh tour and netted crabs and various sealife.

Several visits to the Food Lion always meant a quick run through the commons area to feed the birds and turtles.  This was a favorite place to visit.

Both of them had just discarded their training wheels, so we rented bikes to try out the bike trail. This became a daily trek and always ended up at EIR to get an ice cream treat.

The ocean energized us, and we soon realized we were all children again—with no clocks or deadlines, justwater, sun, sand and plenty of sunscreen.

We met our next door neighbors and the kids became acquainted and had joint ventures planned, like nightly walks on the beach to search out crabs.  This led to a sleepover and pizza.  The adults told us they had so much fun that week, they were renting the same place, same week next year, and asked to do the same.

We traveled to Swansboro and Hammock State Park to look for turtle nests, and then met for a meal on the waterfront.  We went back to this quaint little town another day to shop the art shops.  My daughter found a painting of the Bogue Inlet Pier to take back to her Salt Lake City home.  A trip to Yannas’ was a must do.  I was not expecting Elvis in the ladies’ room.

The folks at Emerald Isle Realty took care of us to make this family vacation truly memorable.  I truly hope we can continue this tradition.

Back to the Island

My wife Priscilla and I began coming to Emerald Isle when our children were just approaching their teens. We have three sons.  My wife’s sister and her husband, Nancy and John, have two sons.  Their family always joined ours for summer vacation.  The five boys were close in age and we wanted to establish a tradition of getting them together regularly so they would grow up knowing each other and being friends.  The two families settled on the beach as the best format to engage and entertain five growing boys; and we settled on Emerald Isle (EI) because, to us, it presented the best family environment.  We came year after year as our sons grew to adulthood; got married one by one; and had families of their own. But the EI tradition stuck, and it stuck not because we wanted it to continue, but because our sons and their families now wanted the same marvelous, yearly, vacation experiences they grew up knowing. They wanted their children to bond with their cousins as they had with theirs.

I worked in the science field during this period and Priscilla and our family lived several places.  John was a Marine Colonel so Nancy, John, and their family moved frequently as well.  Nevertheless, we always returned to EI from wherever we were for the family week at the beach. When Pris and I retired to Florida about the same time as Priscilla’s family in 2005, we tried to shift the summer week to Florida beaches for convenience, but it was not the same for us or the children.  So as the Jimmy Buffett song “Back to the Island” goes, we all felt we “had to go back to the island”, Emerald Isle. Now each summer our families flock from California, Maryland, Georgia, New York, and Florida to Emerald Isle like migratory birds – but with a lot more baggage! Thirteen adults, eight children (presently all under seven), with all the car seats, beach gear, suntan lotion, beach toys, etc. that it takes to mobilize growing families. Last summer we rented about as large a house as is available at EI (Dune View) so we could all stay together.  It was wonderful and we are coming back next year.

For our families the summer is not complete until we gather for our week at Emerald Isle. Having coffee on the deck at sunrise; swimming in the ocean; having shrimp from Captain Phillips; eating at the Crab Shack; playing putt-putt golf; visiting Beaufort for lunch at the Spouter Inn; touring the North Carolina aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores; and hunting for shells and shark’s teeth on the beach during morning walks. And then there are all the traditions that are part of the perfect beach week that you have to see to fully understand, such as:

Surf fishing, not for the fish but for the pleasure
Learning to board surf…. and hearing from Dad how he used to hang ten
Taking long walks with your children where they learn about shells and crabs, and you learn about them
Swimming with your best friends – your cousins
Learning to fly a kite
Catching crabs and sand fleas
Getting the word from Mom
Or the latest news from New York City
Feeling the beach

We always document our beach time with video and photographs, and viewing them is like a chronicle of the advancement of each family member. We take group and family photos at the beach for Christmas cards that we share with our friends to let them track how the families are growing.

So next year we will come back to the island to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We can think of nothing more appropriate than continuing the tradition to celebrate our half century of marriage with our children, grandchildren, and extended family at a place where we have all grown together, Emerald Isle.

I can’t wait until next year

Thirty-four years ago was my first ride home from a week with my family in Emerald Isle.  It was an emotional ride marked with sadness at having to leave but also recollection of the many memories we made and ideas of what we couldn’t wait to do the “next year”. This ride home was to be the beginning of many growing and changing family traditions.
We have grown from our childhood family of five to our now family of fourteen. Some of us have migrated from North Carolina so we now also drive in from Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Many things have not changed over the years.  Our family ranges in age from 2 to 68 and something about Emerald Isle brings us all together in so many ways.

The Truly Amazing Shell Contest
Our shell contest is second to none with categories ranging from smallest (we weren’t sure if one of the entrees was a piece of sand or a shell), to most beautiful (a perfect auger) to shells looking most like something else (one looked just like a tiger)…We get some very unique entrees and ideas.

The Chip off the Old Block Book Group
We have an entire family book club. We choose and read a book in the spring and we wait until the beach to discuss it.  It is so great to see grandparents and grandchildren discussing their favorite Kate DiCamillo character.

Fabulous Food
Each family picks a night to prepare a meal.  We’ve been treated to authentic lasagna, paella, local fresh catch, Mexican fiesta, and a full Chinese feast including fortune cookies to name just a few.  Of course this always leaves us an open night for a trip to Morehead City and a night to visit the famous Big Oak for the unforgettable shrimp burger.

My mind is flooded with things we love to do at the beach. Fishing, long beach walks, great talks on the deck watching the sun rise and watching the picture perfect sunsets, putt putt golf, the yearly Aquarium trip, the many Food Lion trips, riding the waves and the time spent with our family just being together at a place we all love so much.

I can’t wait until next year!
