Cape Lookout Lighthouse and National Seashore

Where:
1800 Island Road
Harker's Island, NC 28531

Business Description

Cape Lookout Lighthouse was named Best National Park Beach in 2016 by readers of USA Today and 10Best

Cape Lookout National Seashore was listed among the Best Beaches in North Carolina by Travel + Leisure in 2022

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is located on the southernmost portion of the Cape Lookout National Seashore, one of several islands in a string of barrier islands that stretch over 56 miles, from the Ocracoke Inlet to the Beaufort Inlet. This uninhabited and unspoiled area is home to a variety of wildlife, birds and sea creatures.

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse, also known as “Our Diamond Lady,” has been a beacon on the shores of Cape Lookout for more than 200 years. Her diamond pattern creates an optical illusion of sorts that has aided sailors and ships from meeting their fate due to unsuspected hazards in the waters that surround the island.

Note: The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is closed for climbing this year. We anticipate renovations to be completed by the 2025 climbing season.

Cape Lookout National Seashore Certified as a Dark Sky Place

The Cape Lookout National Seashore has been certified as an International Dark Sky Park. This certification by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) recognizes the exceptional quality of the night skies of the park and the opportunities it provides for astronomy-based experiences for park visitors. Cape Lookout National Seashore is the first in the National Park Service on the Atlantic coast to receive this certification.
