With the summer months behind us, Emerald Isle is ready to embrace the fall season with open arms and we hope you are too. The beaches are still nice and warm to visit, but the town transitions with the season for a refreshing time along the Crystal Coast. And as the weather cools just slightly, the locals get ready for fall holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving, which provides fun for locals and visitors alike.
It’s a great time to visit and still experience all the beauty and wonder this area has to offer! Below are our tips for planning the perfect fall vacation on North Carolina’s Southern Outer Banks!
Early in the fall season, the weather is still warm enough to enjoy the beach in all its glory, and as the weather begins to cool down, it’s still enjoyable! One of the biggest perks of the fall beach season for guests is seeing fewer crowds and more wide-open beaches as kids are back to school and families begin to plan their 2020 vacations. During this time, beachcombing becomes one of our favorite fall activities where you never know what treasures you might find!
With slightly cooler water also comes better fishing and Emerald Isle turns into a hotspot for anglers of all types. The fishing will heat up with migratory patterns for many types of fish becoming more active in the area. Some of the most sought-after catches range from spot fish, red drum and flounder. Other fish that frequent the waters of Emerald Isle include king mackerel, bluefish, snapper and grouper.
Other than the great fishing during the fall season, taking an early morning stroll or an evening walk down the beach with your family or loved one will make it easy to understand why guests come back during this time year after year. Feel the cool ocean breeze on your face, see the vast array of colors painted by the sun and embrace the true beauty that visits us daily.
Another way to observe the beautiful fall scenery on the Crystal Coast is to take a road trip to a few of the scenic areas around the island. The state parks in the area are gorgeous during this time with most of the vegetation maintaining its lush foliage and wildlife becoming a bit more active as they prepare for cooler months. Fort Macon State Park and Hammocks Beach State Park are both great options to check out if you’re looking for natural beauty with a historical backdrop.
Despite the lighthouse being closed until next summer, the Cape Lookout National Seashore is still open for visits and makes a great spot to setup an easy picnic. In the Shackelford Banks area, which is a neighboring barrier island, you will have a chance to see the majestic wild horses that inhabit the area throughout the year.
We also encourage you to bring a camera along as you may encounter some of the locals like white-tailed deer, egrets, woodpeckers, black-crowned night herons and much more as they make their yearly migrations through the area. For something a little closer to your vacation rental, we recommend checking out Emerald Isle Woods Park as it offers a leisure hike with generous views of the Intracoastal Waterway that is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the fresh sea breeze while still being surrounded by forest.
Treats and Eats
Aside from the beautiful beaches and laid back atmosphere, Emerald Isle is also known for its culinary expertise! And with fall in full swing, expect some of the menus to change with the season, bringing in new flavors and dishes that will enhance your North Carolina dining experience. Choose a classic dish or try something new, either way you will go home satisfied and wanting more.
Over the next few months, there are also plenty of festivals planned, like the Mullet Festival of Swansboro and the Caviar Farm Tour that revolve around the local fare. Be sure to check them out on our events page!
If a cold adult beverage is more your speed, then you should visit one of the local breweries that are serving up some creative fall-flavored libations. During this time, The Growler Bar in Emerald Isle features seasonal craft beers like Nosferatu and Oktoberfest. Wine bars in the area are also serving up various local wines that pair nicely with the changing seasonal flavors!
As we mentioned earlier, when traveling to Emerald Isle for a getaway, it’s almost a necessity to go on a picnic. It’s simply one of the easiest ways for families or couples to unwind and enjoy a meal on the beach or at one of the area parks. If you don’t feel like preparing everything at your vacation rental, you can swing by Beaufort Grocery Company and order one of their delicious deli-style sandwiches or salads and be on your way in no time.
Sunrises and Sunsets are common daily occurrences, but in Emerald Isle they are spectacular masterpieces as colors stretch across the sky and can be seen for miles up and down the coast. Whether you’re on the village-like roads of Emerald Isle or in one of the smaller nearby communities, like Beaufort or Swansboro, the early sun will hit the ocean towns in a way only unique to the Crystal Coast. Grab a warm cup of coffee and take advantage of the crisp beautiful mornings that come with the season.
What goes up, must come down, and the Emerald Isle sunsets are something to marvel at during your stay. The way light escapes before nighttime brings out the golden amber colors of the sky that reflect nicely off of the calm waters of the Atlantic. If you find yourself closer to Bogue Sound, you will have another great opportunity to take in a gorgeous sight while the sun is setting below the horizon. No one will ever get tired of seeing a beautiful sunrise or sunset, including us, so be sure to share your photos with friends and family using #eirealtync on Facebook and Instagram.
